Quality and care are two words that come to mind as I sit down to tell you about Steveston Seafood House. Voted Richmond’s Best Restaurant in the Overall Category (Richmond News Best of 2025), Steveston Seafood House is a fine-dining restaurant with a “come as you are” attitude that welcomes families and individuals to bring their appetite for good food and service—no stuffy suits or dress shoes required! The prices are very affordable for the generous portions, and they offer non-seafood dishes too.
Arctic Char from fundraiser event
Recently, my husband Tim and I went there on a date night. Like many other couples raising kids these days, dining at fancier restaurants has become rare for us. But the evening was a special fundraiser to rebuild a local school playground.
With each three-course dinner priced at $80, and a whopping $50 from each ticket being donated, it was the perfect reason to get out of the house.
The event raised an incredible $3200 in total!
How did the restaurant manage to give such a large portion of proceeds to the school? The servers were volunteering that night! So, on top of the delicious food and good cause, knowing that the servers were there because they genuinely cared about helping their community made the meal even more memorable.

Shane Dagan’s adventures from busboy to owner
What was happening in 1998?
While Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” and Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” blasted across radio stations on repeat, 15-year-old Shane was busy at his first job as a front-of-house busboy at Steveston Seafood House.
It was the start of his adventures in the business, working through nearly every position there, including dishwasher, cook, bartender and server—and eventually, the owner in 2007. Being only 24 years old at the time, Shane was a young man taking over what’s now known to be the oldest restaurant in the neighbourhood. The Seafood House was originally established in the late 70’s, and Shane is the third owner in its nearly 50-year history!

The heart & passion of the team
No doubt, Shane’s been in the business for a long time, but head chef Sushila Narain wins the title of longest-standing member of the Steveston Seafood House with 45 years of experience and counting!
And in case you must know, Blondie’s “Call Me” was amongst the most popular radio hits during the time Sushila started. Hm…I wonder how many shoulder pads and success perms she observed coming through those doors.

Fashion, music, and hairstyles come and go, but consistent quality, attentiveness, and skillfully prepared seafood are timeless. As long as diners still crave and appreciate each dish from her kitchen, Sushila’s passion and sense of pride remain strong, as she serves generations of guests who keep coming back.

“It feels like coming home.”
You’ve read my opinion of the food and dining experience at the start of this article, but if you need more proof, let’s see what other guests have to say. Shane says that guests often express appreciation for the warm, welcoming atmosphere and the quality of their seafood. “Many say it’s their go-to place for anniversaries, birthdays, and special occasions.”

Top-notch, fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour are just a few of the descriptors that commonly pop up when staff ask guests for feedback. Other comments include, “This is the best seafood I’ve ever had,” or “We come here because we know it’s always going to be good.”
“It’s not just the meal,” says Shane. “It’s the warmth, familiarity, and way they’re treated. Many say it feels like coming home, especially those who have been dining with us for decades.”

First dates, brunch with grandkids, and all seasons in between
Some of the most memorable moments from Shane’s career include guests who tell him they had their first date at the Steveston Seafood House back in the 70s or the 80s. Now, decades later, they’re celebrating anniversaries, sometimes bringing their children or even grandchildren.

Increasing accessibility to their food and fine-ding experience
Even with loyal returning customers and a solid line-up of fan-favourite dishes, the business doesn’t take anything for granted. They continue to explore new opportunities to make their cuisine and fine-dining experience accessible to a wider range of clientele.
If you’ve been thinking, “Why are the fancy restaurants only catering to the people with energy to go out in the evenings, or those who can drive at night?”—the Steveston Seafood House hears you, and has now opened their doors for lunch seven days a week!
The Steveston Connection
On their lunch menu, you can even enjoy some nostalgic dishes from the past that they have brought back from 25 years ago. Dishes include The Garry Point (lingcod, scallops, shrimp, prawns in a New Orleans cream sauce) and The Steveston Connection (Pacific crab, shrimp and prawns in a mild curry sauce)—to name a couple of the tasty legends that have made a comeback!

Imagine sitting down with your adult child for lunch and sharing menu items that you once enjoyed before they were born! And since we’re talking about the past again, you could fill them in on the whole Y2K situation, or sing to them a few lines from “Steal My Sunshine” by Len that was all the rage two and a half decades ago.
Here for the community
In the introduction, you heard about one way that the Steveston Seafood House contributes to their local community—namely, through donations and fundraisers. Are there other ways that the restaurant serves the community? Good question! Yes.
If you’re from around here, I’m sure you’ve noticed that in recent years, many neighbourhood restaurants and venues have closed down. That means fewer places for people to gather and engage in community. One way to facilitate people in coming together is by welcoming larger groups to book celebrations and corporate functions.

Recognizing the importance of social interaction and outings for older adults, the Steveston Seafood House has also partnered with several seniors residences. They have been collaborating to bring residents safely to and from the Village, so they could enjoy a delicious meal, a day of shopping, or stroll along the waterfront. At a time when stories of isolation and rising loneliness are so prevalent, accommodations like this are more important than ever.
So there you have it—the Steveston Seafood House story. I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed writing it. If your heart is filled with warm, fuzzy feelings while your mouth is watering, I’ll take that as a win!
