Weekday Walks in Steveston

5-part photo series by Aidan Chan capturing everyday life in our community

  • Intro by Tania Reitsma, creator of Steveston People.

For a long time, I wanted to have a photo series on Steveston People that would capture how Steveston looks and feels to a resident like me on a typical quiet day. No big festivals, no crowds, no parades—just the beauty of everyday life in this area. I hadn’t been able to get the project off the ground myself, but then I met Aidan Chan. When he showed me his portfolio, I was especially drawn to his street photography style, which felt like a perfect match for this idea that had been sitting in my mind.

Together, we narrowed the project down to five locations in Steveston for Aidan to photograph. This photo series is divided into five parts, each part featuring a collection of photographs from one of these locations:

    1. Moncton & More

    2. Britannia Shipyards

    3. Gulf of Georgia Cannery

    4. London Landing

    5. Steveston Community Centre & Tram

  • Who are you?

My name is Aidan Chan and I was born in Vancouver. I moved to Steveston when I was five and haven't left yet (I'm 18). I am currently studying for a bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation at Douglas College, where I plan to start working with youth at clinics or community centres.

How did you get into photography?

I got interested in photography from a high school class and borrowed my aunt's DSLR for a little while. I really enjoyed walking around my neighbourhood and documenting what I saw during my every day, although its mundane most of the time.

I've always wanted to create art in some capacity and express myself through creative and interesting ways. I enjoy taking pictures because it gives me time to fully focus on something and give it some personal meaning.

I'm starting to prioritize spending less time editing my photos and spending more time creating spontaneous moments that represent my surroundings and state of mind.

What type of equipment do you use to take your photographs?

I shoot with Fujifilm and use a variety of lenses such as a 27mm, 18-50mm and 18-200mm. I really enjoy the SLR styling of the cameras and the personal feel I'm able to give them through the photos.

Do you have a favourite style of photography?

My favourite style is definitely street but I want to visit more countries to expand on my travel photography skills as well. I'm heavily inspired by Teo Crawford and my photography teacher, Sharma.

How do you feel about working on this photo series?

I've enjoyed having more purpose to my photography and focusing on capturing a story in this little village we call home. I’m excited to share my work with even more people.
