About SOS Children’s Village Thrift Store

The SOS Children’s Village Thrift Store sells second hand fashion, housewares, books and much more! Located on Moncton street in Steveston Village, the shop is known for the warm service by their friendly and dedicated staff and volunteer team, and of course—their spectacular window displays. Sales from the thrift store benefits SOS Children's Village BC, an organization providing support to children in foster care and youth aging out of care.

Yasmin Tang, is the Store Manager. Not only is she a committed leader in the organization, she also has an amazing eye for design and merchandising.

  • Yasmin:  I worked in retail many years after I immigrated to Canada because it was hard to get the same import/export job as I did back in China. After 15 years in retail, I moved up to Assistant Store Manager at Mark's (formerly Mark's Work Warehouse).

I felt I needed a change, so I enrolled in the Merchandising Associate Program at Vancouver Community College (VCC) and gained knowledge of visual display.

Meanwhile, I was volunteering for Aunt Leah's Thrift Store as their Window Stylist. That's where I discovered my unique skill and talent to create interesting windows with all the donated items.

Now as the SOS Trift Store Manager, I contribute all my passion for window displays to bring fun and positive—sometimes powerful—messages to the community. And of course, bring in customers to the store.

I am currently training a few talented young people to create window displays with me as well.

Where do we get our inspiration for our ever-changing window displays? Sometimes we follow holiday themes or are sparked by a unique item being donated which gets the creative process going!
